What is P21?
P21, also written P021, is a small synthetic peptide based on an active region of ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), a protein that supports nerve cells. It carries an adamantane-based amino acid at its end, a fatty group that helps it cross the blood-brain barrier. It was developed by Khalid Iqbal’s group at the New York State Institute for Basic Research and has been studied in mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome.
P21 is not related to the cell-cycle protein also called p21 (CDKN1A).
