What is Melanotan 2?
Melanotan 2 (MT-II) is a synthetic cyclic peptide developed at the University of Arizona as a shorter, more potent analogue of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone. It acts on several melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R and MC5R), including receptors in the brain, which makes its effects much broader than those of Melanotan 1.

Melanotan 2 vs Melanotan 1 and PT-141
- Melanotan 1 (afamelanotide) is linear, 13 amino acids long, and acts mainly on MC1R in skin.
- PT-141 (bremelanotide) has the same cyclic core as Melanotan 2 but ends in a free acid instead of an amide.
Regulatory status
Melanotan 2 is not an approved medicine anywhere. The US FDA has listed serious safety concerns, including case reports of melanoma, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome and priapism. Regulators including the UK MHRA have warned the public against using it. This product is sold for laboratory research use only.
