What is L-Carnitine?
L-Carnitine is a small molecule made in the body from the amino acids lysine and methionine. It carries long-chain fatty acids across the inner membrane of mitochondria, where they are broken down for energy, through the enzymes of the carnitine shuttle (CPT1 and CPT2). It is not a peptide. Researchers use it in studies of fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial metabolism.
L-Carnitine product specifications
- Compound: L-Carnitine (levocarnitine)
- Type: amino acid derivative (quaternary ammonium compound)
- Molecular formula: C7H15NO3
- Molecular weight: about 161.2 g/mol
- CAS number: 541-15-1
- Strengths: 200mg and 2000mg
200mg vs 2000mg: what is the difference?
Both strengths contain the same compound, L-carnitine. The only difference is the amount: the 2000mg (2g) strength holds ten times as much L-carnitine as the 200mg strength. A higher figure does not mean a different or “stronger” form of carnitine.
- 200mg: suited to smaller experiments or to trying a new method.
- 2000mg: for larger or repeated work from one batch.
Watch the units when comparing listings. 200mg and 2000mg differ by a factor of ten, and they are easy to mix up when one zero is missing. Tell us which strength you need when you contact us on Telegram or by email, and check the label and certificate of analysis for your batch.
L-Carnitine vs other forms of carnitine
L-Carnitine is the natural, biologically active form. Other forms you may see include acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR), which carries an acetyl group, and L-carnitine L-tartrate, a salt form. These are different compounds with different molecular weights. D-carnitine, the mirror-image form, is not biologically active in the same way.
Regulatory status
Levocarnitine is an approved medicine for carnitine deficiency in several countries and is also sold as an oral supplement ingredient. This product is a research chemical, not a medicine or supplement, and is sold for laboratory research use only.
